Bedanya, dalam papan permainan Zathura para pemainnya akan terseret dalam petualangan luar angkasa yang lebih menakjubkan lagi. Kisahnya berawal saat dua kakak-beradik yang saling bermusuhan, Danny (Jonah Bobo) dan Walter (Josh Hutcherson) menemukan sebuah papan permainan Zathura yang tersembunyi di rumah milik ayah mereka (Tim Robbins).

Pada awalnya, permainan itu terasa menyenangkan. Cukup pasang kuncinya dan tekan sebuah tombol. Lalu keluarlah kartu yang berisi instruksi bagaimana menjalankan teka-teki Zathura sampai selesai. Namun semakin lama, permainan itu ternyata semakin berbahaya. Karena tidak ada satupun pemain yang diperbolehkan mengundurkan diri sampai semua teka-teki dalam permainan itu selesai.

Bila aturan itu dilanggar, maka akan muncul hal-hal menakutkan yang bisa mengancam keselamatan nyawa mereka. Terbukti saat Walter memutuskan untuk keluar dari permainan karena merasa Danny berbuat curang, tiba-tiba rumah mereka dihujani oleh meteor hingga mengalami kerusakan yang cukup parah.

Namun ancaman permainan Zathura tidak berhenti sampai disitu saja. Saat semua mulai sadar, ternyata rumah mereka sudah melayang-layang di angkasa luar dan dikelilingi benda-benda angkasa yang bisa menabrak setiap saat. Untuk itu mereka harus berusaha mati-matian menyelesaikan permainan, atau mereka tak akan pernah kembali lagi ke kehidupan normal.

Namun jalan yang ditempuh tidaklah mudah, karena ada banyak bahaya yang selalu mengintai di setiap permainan. Semakin mereka mencoba mengikuti alur permainan tersebut, maka semakin menakutkan pula tantangan yang harus mereka hadapi.
